Busy. I’m sure it’s a word we can all use to describe life. There’s always something to do.
We all have the same amount of time, but we don’t all use ours in the same way. If you’re trying to figure out how to make time for growing a blog as a busy mom, keep reading!
I’m sharing ten of the specific strategies I’ve used to consistently post on my blogs over the past two years. Here you go!
Cut Your Posting Schedule
Honestly, I’d love to post more often. But, I know life happens.
So now I plan on posting once a week on this blog. On my other blog, I post one regular post each week, plus a couple of homeschool product reviews.
Cutting down on my schedule makes it realistic. Even when life is crazy, I can sit down on a Tuesday night and knock out a blog post.
So think about how often you think you can commit to publishing. And then cut that number in half. That’s your new goal!
A major benefit of cutting your posting goal in half is it allows you to get ahead. If you think you can blog twice a week, go ahead and write two posts.
But, schedule the second one out instead of posting it immediately. Do this for a couple of weeks in a row, and all of a sudden you have content for the next several weeks.
When life happens, you can skip a writing period and still stay on schedule.
Treat Yourself Like a Client
If you don’t treat yourself like a client, it’s easy to push your writing off. You’ll find something else that needs your attention.
But, even when other things come up, you make sure your client work gets done. It’s time to develop that mindset for yourself.
Have Your Kids Help
Upper elementary kids and older can be really helpful when it comes to blogging! Teach them what to do, and then let them:
- Use templates to get your images ready
- Upload your draft into Word and change the headings for you
- Insert photos where they belong
- Brainstorm ideas
- Take photos
- Source photos from a free stock photo site
You can even create step-by-step guides for each task to help them do it to your standards.
Have Your Kids Hold You Accountable
Talk to your kids about your goals, and encourage them to hold you accountable. You can call blogging your homework, and they can pester you to get it done.
Teens can follow your social media profiles, and help hold you accountable for posting on a certain schedule.
Many kids enjoy playing this role, so if you’re struggling to make it happen give it a try!
Plan Your Content Calendar
If you don’t have a plan for your blog, you can struggle with writer’s block. But, if you have a list of post ideas, you’ll always have one to pull out and flesh out.
I like to brainstorm enough content for three months, or about twelve posts at a time. This gives me time to think about upcoming events, holidays, and all of that. Of course, I usually add to my list as new ideas strike!
Have a place to write down all your ideas. I use the Notes app on my phone usually.
Use Helpful Apps
When life is crazy, I know I can knock out a blog post on my phone with the WordPress app. It takes a bit longer, but if we’re stuck in the waiting room for a specialist or something, I can still get my posts done.
I’ve also discovered the ease of making images on my phone. Since most of my images are already on my phone, I don’t have to worry about uploading them.
Once the images are ready, I can use the WordPress app and never have to worry about saving images to my computer.
Find apps that work for you, and use them.
Use Your Found Time
When you have a few minutes to spare, put it to work on your blog.
- Make an outline
- Think about your upcoming posts
- Take some pictures
- Design some images
- Comment on some posts in your niche
- Respond to comments on your blog
Taking just a few minutes at a time might not seem like much, but I promise it adds up over time!
Sometimes, it’s best to outsource tasks. If you consistently struggle to make images for your blog, hire a designer to do them for you. I love Rebekah’s work, and highly recommend her if you’re looking for image or Pinterest help.
You can also hire people to write posts for you, upload your posts to WordPress, or handle your social media. In fact, I’d love to take any of those tasks off your plate. 😀
Don’t feel bad about not doing everything yourself. Your time is precious, and you need to spend some of it with your family!
Grace is an essential component of growing a blog as a busy mom. There will be times when you fail. Sometimes your post will go out late on Tuesday night instead of first thing in the morning.
Or you might skip a week. Life happens.
Don’t beat yourself up, and don’t let one little failure completely derail your progress. Everyone makes mistakes. Be willing to accept it and move forward. It’s okay!
